The client on the other end of the phone was, I assumed, procrastinating. Finally, after several weeks of unreturned phone calls and unanswered email – he calls.
It happens. Some design projects start off strong and then fizzle out. Sometimes the lack of progress reflects a lack of funding. Sometimes a client crisis happens and takes priority. And on several occasions, a personnel change may derail the project for some time. (Hello new client contact) There are a thousand reasons for a project’s loss of momentum, but only one solution — get it back on track.
But this was different. This was the mother of all client excuses. Totally valid, but still the mother of all client excuses, one I’d never heard before and will probably never hear again.
The voice on the other end of the phone simply said, “I was dead.”
Hmmm. That’s a new one. Wasn’t ready for that.
“I was at a conference, I felt faint, everything went black and I died. My heart stopped.” Sean, who is an antique book restorer, wasn’t kidding – he was totally serious. He keeled over at a trade conference and was revived by paramedics. It was certainly good news to hear. Sean is a great guy with a truly unique profession and passion for what he does. And he will soon have an equally unique website.
Project brought back from the dead? Good. Client brought back from the dead? Excellent. Sean, you get the prize for most unique client excuse ever. And the most legitimate. We’re glad you’re back.
