Top 7 Tips for Small Business Owners

Back40 Design: 7 Tips for Small Businesses to Maximize your Online Presence

Having a small business means that you wear a lot of hats throughout the day. You are the owner, the receptionist, the HR department and much much more.

Here are our top 7 tips to help you maximize your online presence:

1. Have a professional logo and use it consistently.

Large companies and brands normally have “Brand Standards” that govern how they can use their logos, and colors, and how it can be modified. It’s important to remember to keep your brand consistent across all platforms and media for recognizability as well as professionalism.

2. Have a website!

A Facebook page is not a website. Social media is not a website. It’s 2017; your company needs a real website that is up-to-date, has relevant contact information, and tells what you do.

3. Claim your business listing.

This should be done on both Google and Bing. Your business listing can quickly tell the world when you are open or closed, if you have moved, or show additional images of your services or building. Claiming your business listing lets you control that information and its accuracy.

4. Have a social media presence.

This does not mean you need to have an account on every platform, but you should study your audience and chose at least one social media where your customers are. Better yet, it allows your customers to have a conversation with you.

5. Understand basic SEO.

No, you do not need to become an expert on the subject, but you should know the basics. Keep your keywords consistent in your content, update content regularly, and occasionally run a scan on your inbound links. If nothing else, basic knowledge will help you hire the right team if you decide to do more. Not sure where to start? Moz has an excellent beginner’s guide to SEO.

6. Review your Google Analytics. Don’t just guess.

Google Analytics is a free tool that lets you see how many visitors are coming to your site, how long they are on which page(s), and what they searched to get there! Read our 5 steps for setting and reaching your website goals using your analytics data.

7. Look at what your customers are seeing.

Search your company name on Google and Bing. Look through the information that your users and potential customers are seeing – who are your competitors, what reviews are listed, is your information correct, do you come up when you search certain keywords?
